What was this certification?
Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate: Windows Server 2016 belonged to the Solutions Associate family. It assessed server administration across three named components: installation/storage/compute, networking, and identity. It was a foundation qualification, not the additional design or security specialization represented by an MCSE elective. Microsoft programme announcement.
Introduction, changes and retirement
- 29 November 2016: Microsoft’s Windows Server team documented all three standard exams and the upgrade exam in beta. This establishes a beta-era milestone, not the exact first award date. Announcement.
- 2017: Microsoft Press references documented the released-era compute, networking and identity syllabus. The qualification followed the Windows Server 2012 generation, with a separate upgrade route; it did not automatically rename an existing MCSA. Compute reference; identity reference; upgrade reference.
- 1 January 2019: this MCSA was included in the new MCSE: Core Infrastructure route. Programme transition.
- 31 January 2021: the remaining exams retired after Microsoft extended its original June 2020 deadline. A product-named MCSA: Windows Server 2019 was not introduced as its successor; the programme moved toward role-based credentials. Retirement update.
Existing MCSA awards do not expire under Microsoft’s credential policy. An earned qualification remains a historical achievement even after retirement; transcript presentation is a separate policy matter. Describe it by title and year, then show recent projects to demonstrate current ability. Microsoft policy.
Historical certification requirements
Standard route: all three exams
The standard award rule was 70-740 AND 70-741 AND 70-742. Microsoft’s announcement gives this route without requiring an earlier certification; prior MCSA status was needed for the separate upgrade route. Relevant Windows, networking and administration experience was preparation, not an additional exam award. Microsoft announcement; identity exam preparation guidance.
| Exam | Exact title |
|---|---|
| 70-740 | Installation, Storage, and Compute with Windows Server 2016 |
| 70-741 | Networking with Windows Server 2016 |
| 70-742 | Identity with Windows Server 2016 |
The titles are also listed in Microsoft’s final exam retirement notice. The three exams were complementary requirements, not electives from which a candidate picked one.
Upgrade route: an eligible MCSA plus 70-743
Holders of MCSA: Windows Server 2008 OR MCSA: Windows Server 2012 could take 70-743 — Upgrading Your Skills to MCSA: Windows Server 2016. This replaced the three-exam route for eligible holders; passing 70-743 alone without the qualifying credential was not the stated award rule. Microsoft eligibility announcement; Microsoft Press exam title.
This was a historical upgrade between MCSA generations. It does not provide an upgrade entitlement to AZ-802, AZ-104 or another current credential.
Technologies and skills covered
| Component | Technologies and operational skills |
|---|---|
| 70-740: compute and storage | Server installation, Hyper-V, Windows containers, storage, high availability, and maintaining host/compute environments. Early material included Nano Server deployment. Microsoft Press objectives |
| 70-741: networking | DNS, DHCP, IPAM, remote access, network performance and software-defined networking, including Hyper-V Network Virtualization and Network Controller. Microsoft objective document |
| 70-742: identity | AD DS deployment and maintenance, Group Policy, AD Certificate Services, federation and access solutions. Microsoft Press objectives |
| 70-743: upgrade | Changes across server domains built on an earlier MCSA, including virtualization, availability, networking and identity. It was an upgrade assessment, not evidence that the holder sat the other three exams. Microsoft Press |
The certification therefore supports a claim to a broad Windows Server foundation. It does not by itself establish expertise in System Center VMM, security operations, cloud architecture or application delivery; those depend on additional study and work.
What remains relevant today
Your understanding of domain replication, Group Policy, DNS dependencies, virtualization, storage and availability remains useful. Current Windows Server administration still includes these areas. The larger change is how servers connect to management and security services and how workloads span on-premises and Azure environments. Current Windows Server objectives.
A professional who has kept operating production systems may already have bridged much of the gap. Compare the current objectives with the tasks you can perform and troubleshoot, rather than assuming the retirement of an exam invalidated all its knowledge.
What has changed
- Server 2016 is approaching the end of extended support in January 2027. For administrators still running it, migration planning is an immediate use of existing skills. The certification’s retirement and the operating system’s lifecycle are different events. Product lifecycle.
- Nano Server’s deployment model changed. Early standalone Nano Server installation material is not today’s default server build pattern; Microsoft now documents Nano Server as a container base image. Preserve the minimal-footprint principle while learning the supported deployment model. Removed/changed features.
- Identity extends beyond domain membership. Entra introduces tenant roles, app access and cloud governance. AD CS/federation knowledge helps you ask the right trust questions, but does not remove the need to learn cloud identity responsibilities. AD/Entra comparison.
- Networking and hosting have new control layers. Windows DHCP/IPAM and Hyper-V switches are not Azure’s resource model. Cloud resource permissions, routing, service access and monitoring need their own operational practice. Azure networking role; Azure administrator objectives.
How these skills map to Microsoft today
| Historical skills | Modern application and important difference |
|---|---|
| Hyper-V, availability and storage | Supported Windows Server and hybrid infrastructure retain much of this work. Add current management and recovery capabilities. AZ-802 |
| AD DS, GPO, certificates and federation | Continue necessary domain services; add Entra application integration and identity governance. There is no automatic OU/GPO conversion. Comparison; SC-300 |
| DNS, IPAM and software-defined networking | Apply addressing and traffic-flow knowledge to Azure virtual networks and hybrid connectivity; learn the Azure-specific controls. Network engineer role |
| Server automation | Extend operational scripts into repeatable cloud resource deployments, with permissions and monitoring designed alongside the workload. AZ-104 |
Where do I go from here?
If compute and storage are your main work
Closest modern pathway: Windows Server administrator or hybrid infrastructure engineer, with Windows Server Administrator Associate as a relevant credential.
The 70-740/743 work around hosts, storage and availability is a strong starting point. Keep capacity planning, failure analysis and recovery testing. Update your server-version knowledge, then learn how Windows Admin Center and Azure Arc fit your management estate. A portal change is only part of the gap: you also need to understand who can manage a connected machine and how updates, alerts and recovery are operated. Current objectives.
Suggested learning path: assess a Server 2016 workload and its dependencies → rebuild or migrate it in a supported lab → validate storage, permissions and recovery → onboard a test server to hybrid management → demonstrate patching and alert response. For virtualization-heavy work, test a failure and recovery scenario rather than counting a successful VM deployment as complete operational evidence.
Exam transition, checked 7 September 2026: the current credential uses AZ-802 — Administering Windows Server. Microsoft says AZ-800/AZ-801 retire on 30 September 2026; check current booking status and transition details if already preparing for those exams. This is not a direct MCSA upgrade. Microsoft credential page.
If identity was your strongest component
Relevant credential: Identity and Access Administrator Associate, SC-300 — Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator. Natural continuations include identity administrator and identity engineer.
70-742 gives this route a more specific basis than a generic recommendation to “learn security”: it included certificate services and federation as well as domains and Group Policy. Retain your understanding of trust, certificate lifecycle and access troubleshooting. Add cloud identity lifecycle, workload identities, Conditional Access and governance. Historical objectives; current identity objectives.
Suggested learning path: map a familiar application’s authentication flow → compare its domain/federation dependencies with an Entra integration → configure a test application → assess access policy in report-only mode → review sign-in evidence and privileged role use. Learn what changes for users, administrators and service identities separately.
If you instead want security operations, Security Operations Analyst Associate, SC-200 — Microsoft Security Operations Analyst, is a different branch. Add KQL, Microsoft Sentinel, Defender XDR and incident triage; investigate a benign test alert and explain the evidence behind your response. Certificate administration is useful background, but it is not equivalent to detection and incident-response experience.
If networking was your strongest component
Relevant credential: Azure Network Engineer Associate, AZ-700 — Designing and Implementing Microsoft Azure Networking Solutions. This is a natural option for someone who used 70-741’s DNS, addressing, remote access or SDN material extensively.
Keep your habit of tracing resolution and packet flow. Add Azure resource basics, virtual networks, hybrid connectivity, private service access and cloud network security. Knowing Windows Network Controller or IPAM does not automatically teach Azure’s routing and service-access behaviour. Historical networking objectives; current role.
Suggested learning path: gain basic Azure administration experience → connect two test virtual networks → design name resolution across an on-premises/cloud boundary → introduce private access to a service → diagnose an intentional DNS or route fault. Explain the complete traffic path and access boundary. This can support cloud network engineering or strengthen an existing hybrid infrastructure role.
If you want broader cloud responsibility
Relevant credential: Azure Administrator Associate, AZ-104 — Microsoft Azure Administrator. Your compute/network/identity foundation fits the role’s expected infrastructure background. Add subscriptions, resource groups, Azure permissions, managed storage, monitoring and repeatable deployment. Microsoft objectives.
Suggested learning path: operate a small Azure workload end to end → deploy its resources from source control → separate resource administration from guest OS access → test backup/recovery → inspect cost and diagnose a failed deployment. These are practical additions to server administration, not reasons to discard it.
For a later architecture direction, build on that operational experience with governance, business continuity, workload tradeoffs and managed data services. Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires Azure Administrator Associate plus AZ-305 — Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions. Design two options for a familiar workload and explain failure domains, migration sequence and cost. Neither this MCSA nor familiarity with server diagrams replaces the current prerequisite or design experience.

Historical scope and source notes
The November 2016 announcement describes beta availability, so it is not used as an exact certification first-award date. The original announcement abbreviates the upgrade exam title; Microsoft Press and the retirement list support “Upgrading Your Skills to MCSA: Windows Server 2016.” Objective revisions are not assumed identical across every sitting. No additional elective route is claimed from the sources reviewed.
