I have this MCSA — where should I go now?

Where can this take me today? Database administration is the closest continuation. This MCSA already included Azure provisioning; the next step is updating your platform and service knowledge, not abandoning SQL expertise.

Your recent work Closest direction What to add
Backups, availability and instance maintenance Supported SQL Server / hybrid DBA Migration, current security and tested recovery
Moving databases into Azure Azure SQL administration · DP-300 Service selection, identity, automation and cost
Query tuning and application databases Database performance specialist Current diagnostics, workload testing and deployment discipline

What was this certification?

Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate: SQL 2016 Database Administration was the administration-focused SQL Server 2016 qualification in the Solutions Associate family. Microsoft sometimes shortened the name to “SQL 2016 Database Admin.” It was distinct from SQL 2016 Database Development and SQL 2016 BI Development. Microsoft roadmap; Microsoft Press award description.

Timeline and relationships

The qualification appears in Microsoft’s September 2016 certification-path material. It followed the broader SQL Server 2012/2014 MCSA with a more focused administration route. Microsoft Press’s 2017 references document the two-exam syllabus. 2016 roadmap; administration reference.

It could be used as a prerequisite for MCSE: Data Management & Analytics, which required an additional qualifying elective. It did not itself award that MCSE. The remaining exams retired on 31 January 2021, after Microsoft extended the original June 2020 deadline. The subsequent role-based model did not automatically convert MCSA holders into Azure-certified DBAs. Final roadmap; retirement update.

Existing MCSA certifications do not expire under Microsoft’s credential policy. Record your exact title and year, then describe current database responsibilities alongside it. Holder policy.

Historical certification requirements

Standard route: both exams

Exam Exact name Role in the qualification
70-764 Administering a SQL Database Infrastructure Required administration component
70-765 Provisioning SQL Databases Required provisioning component

Microsoft Press states that passing both earned the MCSA. The standard route did not list a prerequisite certification; practical database experience was expected preparation. These were not elective alternatives. 70-764 reference; 70-765 award rule.

Earlier upgrade route: a qualified historical reconstruction

A contemporary Global Knowledge announcement described MCSA: SQL Server 2012/2014 + 70-765 as an upgrade route. This is secondary archival evidence, not a verified final Microsoft requirement set. Its effective dates and continued availability through retirement have not been established. Someone whose transcript shows this route should not be told that 70-764 was necessarily missing from their award. Archived training-provider announcement.

There was no separately numbered “SQL 2016 DBA upgrade exam” in that announcement: it named the same provisioning exam used in the standard route.

Technologies and skills covered

70-764 covered controlling database access and auditing, backups and restores, instance monitoring, and high availability/disaster recovery. This represented operating and protecting a database service, rather than primarily designing reports. Administration objectives.

70-765 covered provisioning and configuring SQL Server, database and storage management, and SQL deployment in Azure. Azure SQL Database and SQL Server on Azure virtual machines were already part of its scope. It is inaccurate to treat this qualification as purely on-premises. Provisioning objectives.

The practical foundation includes permissions, recovery requirements, diagnosing resource pressure and deciding how a database should be hosted. The award does not by itself demonstrate SSIS pipeline design, DAX modelling or machine-learning expertise.

What remains relevant today

T-SQL, relational behaviour, transactions, execution-plan reasoning, access control and recovery testing remain valuable. Azure SQL uses the SQL Server engine, so much of your database understanding continues to apply. Managed hosting changes your responsibilities more than it changes the need to understand the workload. Azure SQL overview.

A DBA who can explain why a restore meets a recovery objective or why a query regressed brings knowledge that a portal walkthrough cannot replace. Use that experience as the foundation for learning new controls.

What has changed

  • SQL Server 2016 is beyond ordinary extended support as of this September 2026 review. Extended Security Updates are a separate programme. A supported migration is therefore a concrete learning and operational priority. SQL Server lifecycle.
  • Deployment choice matters. SQL Server on an Azure VM retains OS and instance responsibilities; Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database delegate more platform operation to Microsoft. Compatibility and management features differ. Deployment comparison.
  • Cloud access and operations add another layer. Learn Azure resource permissions, Microsoft Entra authentication, connectivity, service-level performance limits and automation. A database login and permission to manage its Azure resource are different controls. Current DBA objectives.

How these skills map to Microsoft today

Historical work Modern application
Instance provisioning and maintenance Supported SQL Server or SQL Server on Azure VMs when instance/OS control is required; assess managed services when reducing platform management is a goal. Options
Backup and availability planning Continue proving recovery outcomes; learn the selected service’s retention, restore and failover capabilities. DP-300 objectives
Access and auditing Add cloud identity and network boundaries to database permissions and auditing. Current DBA role
Monitoring and tuning Retain workload diagnosis; learn current service metrics and distinguish an inefficient query from a capacity limit. DP-300

Where do I go from here?

If you still operate SQL Server

Closest pathway: SQL Server DBA or hybrid database administrator. Azure Database Administrator Associate, associated with DP-300 — Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions, is relevant because its scope includes both SQL Server and Azure SQL. Microsoft role description.

Keep your experience with backup chains, permissions, maintenance and incident response. The immediate gap may be moving a 2016 workload onto a supported platform while preserving behaviour and recovery capability.

Suggested learning path: inventory database and application dependencies → establish a workload baseline → rehearse migration to a supported target → validate logins, jobs and application behaviour → test restore/failover → compare performance. Add current Azure administration skills where your estate uses Azure. Present the compatibility findings and rollback decision alongside the migration, rather than merely saying the database attached successfully.

If you are moving to Azure SQL

Relevant credential: Azure Database Administrator Associate / DP-300. Start from the provisioning decisions behind 70-765. Decide whether the workload needs a full SQL Server instance, Managed Instance, or a database-level managed service before practising portal deployment. Service comparison; current credential.

Suggested learning path: choose a representative sample database → record instance dependencies and recovery needs → compare two plausible targets → configure restricted connectivity and database identity → migrate and validate the application → recover to a chosen point → investigate a slow query and review running cost. Document which tasks remain yours and which belong to the provider.

This builds toward Azure SQL DBA or database platform engineer work. The main gap is service-specific operation, not learning relational databases from scratch.

If performance and database development interest you

Use your monitoring experience to deepen query-plan analysis, indexing, concurrency and safe schema change. DP-300 is relevant when the job remains operational; it is not a general application-programming credential. Role scope.

Suggested learning path: capture a repeatable workload → identify one query or concurrency problem → measure an indexing or query change → test correctness and regression → deploy the change through reviewable scripts with a recovery plan. This is useful evidence for performance-focused DBA work and collaboration with database developers.

If your work moved into data pipelines

Choose this branch because you have ETL, transformation or analytical delivery experience, not merely because “data” appears in both job titles. Fabric Data Engineer Associate and DP-700 focus on ingestion, transformation and reliable data processing. Microsoft role.

Suggested learning path: ingest a SQL order dataset into a Fabric Lakehouse through a pipeline → use a watermark for incremental loads → transform and validate sales totals with SQL or PySpark → rerun a failed batch without duplicating orders → inspect pipeline duration and errors. Add OneLake storage, workspace permissions and Fabric orchestration. The Data Management & Analytics pathways distinguish database operations, data engineering, semantic modelling and reporting, with separate learning sequences and projects.

Sources and methodology

Microsoft roadmaps and Microsoft Press establish the standard requirements. The earlier upgrade route is explicitly labelled secondary reconstruction. Modern choices and exercises are editorial analysis, checked 7 September 2026.

Historical scope and source notes

The 2016 roadmap establishes the programme era, not an exact first-award day. The final roadmap is Microsoft’s February 2021 retirement update, preserved through indexed PDF text; its original endpoint was unavailable during direct retrieval. The separately labelled upgrade announcement does not establish every later eligibility rule. No unverified date has been inferred from the SQL Server product release.
